I was thinking about how to start my blog.....should I talk about belly fats, or how to lose weight or how to set realistic goals when exercising... the list just go on and on.....until I stumbled upon this article entitled, "I couldn't afford to lose any more" from The New Paper, on 24 August 2011.
Tears welled up in my eyes when I read about how this Chinese dancer, Ms Liao Zhi, who lost her legs in the Sichuan quake and yet continued to dance and made a difference in the lives of many others. I just made up my mind at that point to start my blog with her heart wrenching but uplifting story.
Just about 3 years ago, she was a dance instructor and a young mother of a 11-month old daughter, who had just started to piece back her life together after an unhappy marriage. Then the 8.0-magnitude earthquake happened on a fateful day and took away the lives of her loved ones and as well as more than 80 000 people in China. During the long 12 hours ordeal in which she was trapped under the debris, she had to bear both the physical pain of her leg which was crushed by the debris as well as the mental torture of witnessing the death of her daughter and her mother-in-law happening right before her eyes.
Her lower limbs were amputated and she could no longer do the traditional Chinese folk dance which she loved. While she could have wasted herself in sorrow, she did not, instead she picked herself and found renewed motivation to stay alive after finding solace in the kindness of an elderly stranger who left her S$2.25 under her pillow while she was recuperating in the hospital.
She said that she had lost many things and could not afford to lose any more. And she moved on to learn a new dance with a giant drum and performed in a Miss World event in Chongqing. Not long after, she appeared in a public service broadcast and soon became a household name. She even started to impact the lives of many unfortunate ones by starting a troupe for disabled artistes in 2009, mentoring students between the ages of 4 and 12.
She said:"I've learnt how not to focus on my problems and look on the positive side of things. We live in a beautiful world."
Such indomitable spirit ............and I was encouraged to think of the world as beautiful despite the difficulties in life. We should all continue to dance with joy because we are so blessed to be living in this beautiful world. And I truly hope that you are just as uplifted as I am after reading this....................
